The Ultimate Buyer’s Guide to Cruelty-Free Shampoo

Are you seeking to buy only cruelty-free shampoo products from now on? There are a few things you should know, then! As you begin your journey to only buying cruelty-free products, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.

First of all, it really helps to do your research prior to shopping. You don’t want to accidentally buy a product that isn’t truly cruelty-free — and you also don’t want to settle on a brand that has bad reviews. If you do proper research prior to any purchases, you can find the best cruelty-free shampoo that helps your specific hair type or hair worries.

This list, with some of the best cruelty-free shampoos currently on the market, will hopefully help you! Also, it’s important to remember that not all cruelty-free shampoo is expensive. So, while you’re thinking of buying a new shampoo brand, you don’t have splurge if you don’t want to. You can find high-quality products (some of which are listed above) that still get the job done!

Always remember that brands that don’t test on animals will clearly state that they are 100% cruelty-free. If you don’t see this 100% statement, chances are they make exceptions and do test on animals in some capacity. Steer clear of these companies!

FAQs

What does cruelty-free mean?

Cruelty-free products are items that have not been tested on animals during any step of the creation process. Unfortunately, a lot of brands still test on animals. They do this because they are attempting to see if the ingredients they are using, and the end results of their products, will be safe for humans to use.

A lot of times, they do this to make sure that no allergic reactions happen. However, in the modern era, we’ve learned quite a lot about ingredients used in beauty products. We’ve also discovered ways to test for factors like allergic reactions without using animals.

So, when you see brands tout that they are 100% cruelty-free, this means that they don’t harm or test on animals at all. Sadly, there are still so many huge brands and companies that do this. However, many brands have realized that customers only want to invest in cruelty-free products, so you may see more and more brands begin to adopt these policies over time. At the very least, we can hope this happens!

Are cruelty-free products naturally vegan?

No. As we’ve mentioned above, cruelty-free products are products that have not been tested on animals in any capacity. However, this doesn’t mean that all of their ingredients are vegan. They may still have ingredients in their products that derive from animals.

Vegan products, on the other hand, are 100% devoid of any animal ingredients. Vegan products also tend to be cruelty-free. If a vegan brand touts that they are naturally vegan, you’ll also see them announce that they are 100% cruelty-free (more than likely).

However, you should always do your research, as this isn’t the case all the time. If you’re looking for cruelty-free products, make sure you’re buying from a brand that practices this. If you only want to use vegan products, make sure they clearly state that all their ingredients are vegan. When buying beauty products, you never want to assume.

What does it mean if a brand says that they don’t test on animals, yet also don’t say they are 100% cruelty-free?

This is actually incredibly common — which can also be infuriating. There are many popular companies that state that they do not test on animals… except for certain exceptions. Because of these “exceptions”, they cannot claim that they are 100% cruelty-free. But what are these exceptions?

For the most part, these exceptions mean that they don’t regularly test on animals, but if they have to (for whatever reason) they will, especially if they’re legally required to. For businesses that sell their products in China, they are legally required to test on animals before they are able to sell in the mainland.

Therefore, brands that sell their products in China must test on animals. This is why you’ll see companies say that they don’t test on animals… except for when they occasionally have to. However, because of these exceptions, they also can’t claim that they are 100% cruelty-free.

If you only want to invest in brands that don’t test on animals, you’re going to want to stay away from these companies that aren’t 100% cruelty-free. After all, none of us truly know what all of these “exceptions” are. They might not test on animals regularly as many brands did back in the day, but this does mean that they still do it in some capacity.
