Jeans are probably the most popular type of pants in the world. You and probably anyone you know owns at least a pair.

However, only a few of them ask the vital question – where do these jeans come from? The majority of employees in the clothing industry work in cruel and grim working conditions. On top of that, the cheap, low-quality fabric is full of harmful chemicals. The entire manufacturing process has terrible consequences for the environment.

That’s why it’s time to turn to sustainable clothing. Instead of cheap, Third World country labor, look for jeans that are made in the USA. Find out how a certain brand commits to an ethical cause and support it. This article will show you where to start.

1. Reformation

It all started in 1999, when Yael Aflalo, founder of Reformation, started working in the fashion industry. It didn’t take long for her to see the terrible conditions in which laborers have to work.

Hugely disillusioned, she left the fashion company that she started (Ya-Ya) to rebrand on sustainable principles. With a symbolic name – Reformation, she started a new mission. Her company’s principles are – carefully picked fabric, refurbished vintage, and sustainable materials.

These jeans are made in America. The entire process occurs in the company’s HQ in Los Angeles. That’s where Reformation designs, manufactures, packs, and ships the products.

All Reformation’s employees are earning a US living wage, and the company doesn’t source anything from abroad. The company uses sustainable materials such as lyocell, TENCEL™, organic, and recycled cotton.  There’s few chemicals and no toxic waste.

2. BLDWN

Jeans that are made in the USA just have that something no other jeans have, and BLDWN is acutely aware of that. This brand proudly makes its jeans in America, helping create jobs and ensuring the ultimate quality.

BLDWN’s catalog contains numerous options for both ladies and gentlemen. You can choose between several fit and styling options, with the accent being on modern skinny and tapered variants. Models in the men’s section feature sizes up to 38, while the women’s section goes up to 32.

The company is also active in the sustainability field, and employs ethical business practices. All employees in the production facilities receive living US wages, and are treated equally, regardless of their sex or gender.

3. Buck Mason

Buck Mason is a rare bird among the US-based sustainable brands – the company makes men’s clothes, exclusively. Why, you may ask. The main reason that some brands opt for this approach is that there is a serious shortage of sustainable clothing options for gentlemen.

Buck Mason offers a wide range of clothes, including high-quality, made-in-the USA jeans. Similar to the rest of the brand’s catalog, the Buck Mason jeans are made to last. You can wear them for years, and pass them down to your kids when they grow up. The best thing about them is that they’ll only look better as the time passes.

The company is also among the environmentally conscious and socially responsible.

4. Tellason

There are two main types of jeans: American-made jeans and stuff made abroad. Tellason makes its jeans in the United States, and is one of the most trending brands right now.

The company focuses on combining the authentic and classic design with modern fit options. The end result is a wide catalog of classic contemporary denimwear. In terms of inclusivity, Tellason is hard to beat – its models are available in sizes up to 44.

You can also buy classic denim shirts and jackets from Tellason. Price tags are significantly above what you’d pay for denimwear made in Bangladesh or Indonesia. However, the quality is proportionately higher, too. The best thing about Tellason jeans? They’re made to last you a lifetime.

5. Taylor Stitch

While not primarily a denim brand, Taylor Stich does have a comprehensive jeans collection in its catalog. If classic modern design is what you’re looking for, then you should check out these US-made jeans.

Standard and slim fit options dominate the roster, with indigo blue being the most prominent color option. Depending on the model, sizes up to 38 are available. We should also mention that Taylor Stitch also sells denim shirts and jackets. These are available in both bleached and indigo variants.

Taylor Stitch jeans are there for the active people, and can take a lot of abuse. These jeans “wear in” over time, instead of “wearing out.” The company is committed to using recycled and responsibly sourced fabrics whenever possible.

6. Civilianaire

Civilianaire is proud to say that it sells jeans that are made in America. The company’s founders know that nothing beats the feel and poise of American jeans, and, therefore, they’ve decided against sourcing the production overseas.

As of this writing, Civilianaire’s men’s denim collection is limited to a handful of models. However, they feature the brand’s recognizable timeless styling, and feature standard, slim, and skinny fits. The color palette is limited to indigo and raw tan, while the size chart goes up to 39.

The women’s collection is bigger and quite a bit more diverse. Bleached, wide leg, stretch, and boyfriend models comprise the majority of the offered models. There’s also a small line of denim shorts, both classic and with prints.

7. Bullet Blues

If you randomly picked 100 people from all walks of life and opened their closets, there’s one thing that you’d find in each – jeans. American-made or imported, but, they would all contain at least one pair of the world’s most popular pants.

Bullet Blues, though founded by a French designer (Isabelle Benoit), is one of the most American brands out there, and the strongest proponents of the “Made in America” movement. The brand makes and sells women’s and men’s jeans that feature reasonable prices and premium quality.

Ladies can choose between numerous skinny and boot cut models, with color palette including white, black, bleached, gray, green, and even purple options. The men’s section focuses on darker colors, and offers more classic styling.

8. Rag & Bone

The story of Rag & Bone began in 2002 in the Big Apple. Since then, the company has grown into one of the biggest and most important clothing brands that make their clothes in America. Accordingly, the Rag & Bone catalog features jeans that are made in the USA.

However, though the production facilities are located in Los Angeles, the company mostly imports materials.

Similar to many other clothing brands, Rag & Bone makes and sells both women’s and men’s jeans. The women’s section offers a huge range of models, ranging low to mid, high, and even super-high cut options. The men’s section offers extra slim, slim, and classic fit models, focusing on contemporary, rather than vintage designs.

9. Paige

Paige hails from the Sunshine state, and bills itself as a premium denim jeans brand. If you’re looking for quality, made in the USA jeans, you’re at the right place.

Paige’s women’s collection offers more than 350 models, including pretty much every style and fit you could think of. The color palette is wide, with black, indigo, and grey hues being the most prominent. The biggest available size is 34.

On the other hand, the men’s section has around 240 models, sporting mostly classic-modern designs. The size chart goes up to 44, making sure that even the larger gentlemen are accommodated.

Paige supports a variety of causes, funds, and charities, including TRAINN, the Rape Foundation, Stuart House, NEDA.

10. Good American

Body positivity, inclusion, and empowerment of women and girls is what Good American is all about. The brainchild of Khloe Kardashian and Ema Grede, this trailblazing brand makes and sells US-made jeans, dresses, skirts, shoes, and accessories.

You can choose between low, mid, and high-waste models. There are skinny, boyfriend, and boot cut options, as well. Good American offers denim skirts, shorts, and shirts in a wide range of sizes.

One special section is the maternity jeans section, made for all expecting moms who don’t want to give up their denim during pregnancy. These models have special stretchable waist bands that can expand as your little bundle of joy grows.

The company donates a portion of the profits to the Step Up program that helps girls from under-privileged communities reach their full potential.

11. NYDJ

NYDJ started in 2003 as Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, with a mission to make comfortable, flattering jeans for women of all sizes and shapes. Just as it embraces plus-size ladies, NYDJ has products for petite ladies because its founders know how hard it is for women on both ends of the size spectrum to find jeans that fit and feel good.

What’s even better, NYDJ sells jeans that are made in America. That way, the company creates jobs for US citizens and offers a quality and affordable alternative to super-cheap jeans made abroad.

Skinny, slim, straight, boot cut, pull-on, ankle, whichever fit you prefer, NYDJ’s got it. To make sure everyone’s included, the company also offers special models for tall ladies and moms to be.

12. AG Jeans

Everybody wears jeans in America. That’s a fact, and jeans aren’t going anywhere, even though some fashion elitists might look down on them and consider them non-elegant.

AG Jeans not only sells jeans, but it sells jeans that are made in the USA. You can expect top-notch quality, longevity, and a combination of modern and vintage styles. What’s more, AG jeans are among the most comfortable on the market.

AG Jeans is also very active in the sustainability field. 100% of the water used in the production is recycled. The company is also looking to increase its use of renewable energy.

13. Raleigh Denim Workshop

Raleigh Denim Workshop hails from Raleigh, North Carolina. The story of this unique brand started in a warehouse where its founders used to meet. They had a couple of sewing machines, a dream, and an unwavering will to make it come true.

Today, Raleigh Denim Workshop sells some of the best jeans that are made in the USA. Though popular throughout the country, the brand is still centered in Raleigh, where most of the production takes place.

You’ll find a wide variety of both women’s and men’s jeans in the catalog, with the men’s section being slightly larger and more varied.

14. Dearborn Denim

Made in Chicago, Dearborn Denim jeans is as American as a pair of jeans can be. This relatively young brand is on a meteoric rise. Founded in 2016, it has already secured its spot among the prominent US denim makers.

All models, both women’s and men’s are designed and made in the company’s facilities in Chicago. They’re all handmade, and feature a combination of classic-modern design and superb craftsmanship.

Dearborn Denim also offers super-competitive prices, and makes sure all of its employees, regardless of gender, receive fair and equal wages.

US-Made Jeans Should Be Sustainable and Ethical

Clothes made in the USA, jeans especially still have a long way to go until sustainability becomes the norm, as it depends on various factors. The laws need better regulation,  the public needs to become more aware, and the prices need to drop.

However, there’s a clear improvement in recent years in jeans in America. New, domestic, and ethical brands are emerging, and prominent fashion icons aren’t afraid to pick them up.  Furthermore, big names in the fashion industry are slowly turning ethical, too.

So if you’re looking for jeans that are made in the USA, make sure to look for brands that follow the ethical norms. It’s time that we start changing our values to the benefit of the environment.
