Interview With Natalia From Marmag Creation

Today I'm interviewing Natalia from Marmag Creation - a marketer and entrepreneur with a nack for ethical fashion. My biggest take away from her is to know that it's OK to not get it all perfect. There are ways to work around a non-sustainable wardrobe like capsule wardrobes. Here's her story!

Tell me a little about yourself? Who are you, where are you from/living, etc.?

Hi, my name is Natalia and I am from Mexico. I studied marketing and have worked for mass consumption companies. Most of my life I’ve moved to different cities and have had to learn to adapt to changes. I got married almost 2 years ago in Mexico and then moved to the USA because of my husband’s job

How did you first get into ethical/sustainable fashion?

My mom is a fashion designer, so I’ve always been interested in fashion. After she had me, she never really made a career in fashion, so when I was older, I pushed her to start a hobby side business of selling clothes in Mexico and it was so much fun! After that, we both had to move to different countries, so I don’t sell clothes anymore but I started a blog, and with it I have made so many connections with ethical brands because I love spreading the message that anyone can be happy with less clothes in their wardrobe.

What’s something you really want other people to know about ethical/sustainable fashion?

I think the most important thing to know about sustainable fashion, is that it’s not perfect. I’ve seen so many people get stressed about not being perfectly zero waste, or not posting pictures if their outfit is not 100% from organic or fair trade brands, and I think we all have to acknowledge that the most sustainable wardrobe is the one you already have, even if it is built with 90% fast fashion items, and even if you don’t have the budget to buy from ethical brands that are more expensive, I don’t see buying from fast fashion brands as a mistake, if you shop with a capsule wardrobe mindset. Read this post on how to start an ethical wardrobe on a budget for more on this topic. I also don’t see fast fashion brands always as a mistake because some of them are trying to source their products more ethically because of the noise that fashion activists like us are making, so I guess my best advice is to stay true to your beliefs and you’ll see how we will slowly change the fashion industry together.

Who are your inspirations (ethical fashion or otherwise)?

I have a list of my favorite ethical fashion bloggers here!

Do you have any ethical brands you’d recommend or tips for how to find great thrifted pieces?

Yup, I have a huge list of ethical brands here that I believe in or have personally tried. (I haven’t tried all of them because I try to maintain a balance between collaborating with brands and also staying true to what my wardrobe actually needs.) So, when I want something new or a brand reaches out, I analyze what I could add to my wardrobe that I can create multiple outfits with. If I already have a pair of boots, I’ll look for something that is different and that can be worn with multiple combinations of clothes. I also have this article on how to make money selling your clothes online and where to donate them.

What is one of your current favorite items of clothing you own?

Right now I am obsessed with my Everlane boots, I love how they elevate ANY outfit and when I have to dress a little more classy I can wear them with anything and they make me feel comfortable and stylish without looking overdressed and without suffering in heels!

What are you reading, listening to and/or watching right now?

I am currently catching up on some Netflix series like YOU and Spinning Out, totally recommend. I am the type of person that when it comes to series, loves watching something that is stress free and entertaining like any chick flick. I have the purpose of reading at least one book per month this year, I’m currently in between a book from The Minimalists and “Waking up” by Sam Harris. Want to teach myself to be more mindful and present while maintaining a balance with blogging and technology.
