Is Origins a Cruelty-Free Company?

Origins is a cosmetic and skincare company featuring products powered by nature and proven by science. Origins products are formulated with high quality plant, earth, and sea-based ingredients and are free from parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, formaldehyde, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin, diethanolamine (DEA), polyethylene beads and animal ingredients.

The term “cruelty-free” is not regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration, nor is there a formal legal definition for the term. It is widely understand that a “cruelty-free” product is a cosmetic product that has not been tested on animals. While many cosmetic companies claim their products are “cruelty-free,” the truth is many cosmetic products and product ingredients are actually tested on animals.

Origins states on its website that the company does not believe in testing on animals. However, the Origins website acknowledges that “some countries where Origins is sold require animal testing on all imported cosmetics as part of their regulator safety process.” The parent company for Origins is Estee Lauder, which states on its website that the company doesn’t test its products on animals or ask third-parties to conduct animal testing on its products. However, the Estee Lauder website also acknowledges that “our brands are sold in countries where animal testing on cosmetics or cosmetic ingredients is required by law.”

Origins Selling in China...

Origins sells cosmetic products in China where animal testing on cosmetics is required by law. Chinese law requires animal testing for all cosmetics sold in China but manufactured outside of China. There are some reports that China may be lifting some of these animal testing requirements, however there has been no official change in Chinese law at this time.

The Verdict: Origins is NOT cruelty-free.
